Ella Hickson's Oil  is a play about the global implications of our dependency on oil, following the lives of one woman and her daughter in a collision of empire, history and family. It was my debut show as a stage manager, performed at the Frederic Wood Theatre. Many special elements needed to be scheduled into rehearsal time. This included plenty of fight and intimacy choreography (range of sensitive topics, prop gun and axe), language and dialect coaching (5 coaches, each for a different language/dialect and working with specific actors, some overlapping), dance choreography, and general voice coaching. There was also real food and drink consumed onstage, however, this was limited from the original plan due to a new wave of COVID-19 during its rehearsal period. Rehearsals were shifted online for two weeks with days notice, and understudies were brought on to the project.
